Auckland winters are mild compared to many cities, but the persistent damp and wind make a well-fitted coat essential. At Perfect Tailors, May and June are our busiest months for outerwear alterations — and for good reason.
Why Winter Coats Need Professional Alterations
Off-the-rack coats are designed for average proportions. If your coat gaps at the collar, pulls across the back, or drowns your frame, you're losing both warmth and style. A properly fitted coat traps heat efficiently and moves with your body.
Our Auckland alteration team sees these common issues every winter:
- Sleeves too long — bunching at the wrist lets cold air in and looks untidy
- Shoulders too wide — creates a boxy silhouette and restricts arm movement
- Body too loose — wind cuts through excess fabric; a closer fit is warmer
- Worn lining — torn or threadbare lining reduces insulation and snags on clothing
Our Most Requested Winter Alterations
Coat Resizing
Whether you've lost weight, inherited a coat, or bought online and the fit isn't right — we take in or let out side seams, reshape darts, and adjust the overall silhouette while preserving the coat's original design lines.
Sleeve Shortening
Coat sleeves should end at the wrist bone, allowing shirt cuffs to peek through on formal overcoats. We shorten from the hem or shoulder depending on the coat's construction and button placement.
Relining
A quality coat deserves a quality lining. We replace worn linings with premium Bemberg or silk options, adding years of life to your favourite winter piece. Full relining typically takes 5–7 working days.
Zip Replacement
A broken zip doesn't mean a ruined coat. We source matching zips and install them with reinforced stitching so they outlast the original.
When to Bring Your Coat In
Don't wait until the first cold snap. We recommend bringing winter coats for alteration in early autumn (March–April) to avoid the winter rush. However, our Newmarket studio maintains fast turnaround times year-round:
- Sleeve shortening: 2–3 days
- Taking in/letting out: 3–5 days
- Full relining: 5–7 days
- Zip replacement: 2–4 days
Caring for Your Winter Coat
Between alterations, keep your coat in top condition:
- Brush wool coats after each wear to remove surface moisture and dirt
- Hang on a wide, sturdy hanger — never on a hook by the collar
- Allow to air dry naturally if caught in rain; never use direct heat
- Dry clean once at the end of winter before storing
